Step one is to write down a list of all the things you would like to do, all the things you have experience in and what you think you could do with a little education. These three lists will become your potential pool of opportunities. Your list will begin to shrink.

Now go through the list carefully and select the choices which seem to call out to you. Those which you would have a passion for and which you would love to do every day. A good business plan isn’t just important for you to pinpoint exactly what you will be doing, but also so that you can hand it to a financial institution if you need a loan. You can also use it in future to remind yourself of where your focus should be, just in case you start going off track.

Now you need to create a budget for starting your business. Add items to the list you will need to buy, such as a separate phone line (a cell phone is usually just fine), office furniture, a computer, office supplies, business cards, a printer, colored flyer paper, and professional attire. You need to also include an advertising budget as marketing your business will be the most important project you have for the first few years, until you are turning enough of a profit that it can be reduced slightly.

Now it is time to raise the capital you need to do everything on your budget. That means taking your business plan to anyone who can lend you the money you need. It could be a friend or family member, but it is preferable that you get the money from a financial institution. If you end up going under, you won’t lose your loved one over money that way.
